Aphrodisiacs are “Food, drink, or drug that arouses sexual desire.” Essentially they are mankind’s attempt to hack sex and sensuality. Hacks are a favorite of mine and I love food so I am intrigued by aphrodisiacs.
A Witch’s Interest
For those of you who don’t know, I am a practicing witch in my off hours so I approach aphrodisiacs from a perspective of someone who believes herbs and plants have innate spirits as well as a Pagan Polytheist that believes that the Gods and Spirits are real and have an effect on us if we’re open to it.
Aphrodisiacs are often entheogens – “a chemical substance, typically of plant origin, that is ingested to produce a nonordinary state of consciousness for religious or spiritual purposes.” The very word aphrodisiac comes from relation to the Goddess Aphrodite and these are her sacred plants to perform the rite that is also sacred to her – love making, seduction, etc.
